What is hyoscyamine?

Hyoscyamine is a medication used to treat conditions such as muscle spasms, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach cramps, and bladder problems. It may also be used to treat other medical conditions as determined by your doctor. Hyoscyamine also helps to relieve nausea, vomiting, and excessive saliva production.
Hyoscyamine can help reduce symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramps, spasms, and bladder problems.

Who can benefit from taking hyoscyamine?

Hyoscyamine is typically used to treat adults who are suffering from conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, bladder problems, muscle spasms, and stomach cramps. It may also be used to treat other medical conditions as determined by your doctor.

Why doesn't Medicare cover hyoscyamine?

Medicare does not typically cover hyoscyamine as it is considered to be an over-the-counter drug. You will need to purchase hyoscyamine yourself or through a private insurer. Check your Medicare Part D formulary to see if other medications can be used to alleviate symptoms of IBS.
Depending on your Medicare Advantage plan, you may receive a stipend for over-the-counter costs related to your healthcare. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider or insurance plan for more details about coverage.

How much does hyoscyamine cost?

The average retail price according to GoodRx is about $30. You might be able to find cheaper prices with coupons and shopping around for the best deal.

Side effects of hyoscyamine

Hyoscyamine can cause side effects such as drowsiness, confusion, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation, and dizziness.

Takeaway

In conclusion, Medicare does not typically cover hyoscyamine as an over-the-counter drug. If you have irritable bowel syndrome, check with your doctor before stopping or starting any medication (including hyoscyamine). This content is for informational purposes only.
