Every year the Fall Open Enrollment Period—also called the Annual Election Period—runs October 15 through December 7. During these eight weeks you can join, drop, or switch any Medicare drug plan, and your final choice takes effect January 1 of the coming year.
Switch to a different Part D plan with lower premiums or better pharmacy pricing.
Drop Part D entirely (though we rarely recommend going drug-less).
Join a drug plan for the first time if you delayed enrollment and now want coverage.
Submit your new application before the clock strikes midnight on December 7; Medicare uses the latest submission it receives.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
You move out of your plan’s service area.
You qualify for Extra Help/LIS.
Your plan earns or loses a 5-star quality rating.
Other life events (natural disaster, plan error, etc.).
Run your meds through our —prices change every year.
Watch the deductible + copay math; the lowest premium isn’t always your cheapest total cost.
Confirm pharmacy networks—switching plans can save hundreds if your favorite local pharmacy suddenly becomes “preferred.”
Remember, Part D is also getting better: in 2025 total out-of-pocket drug costs will be capped at $2,000 and you’ll be able to spread those costs over 12 equal payments.
Bottom line: Circle December 7 on your calendar, make your final choice before bedtime, and let the new plan start saving you money on January 1.
Our licensed Medicare advocates can compare every Part D option in minutes—so you beat the deadline with confidence. Call 888-376-2028 or book a quick chat now.
